Mages use tatoos on their face to show which paths they are on. A complete tatoo is a symbol within a circle. A partial tatoo is the symbol only. A wizard can wear a complete spell line tatoo only when he or she as mastered the line, i.e., when the entire spell line has been learned.
When casting an arcane spell, the corresponding tatoo manifests in some way, whether by lighting up, projecting an enlarged hologram of the tatoo, or some other means. Casting an arcane spell without a corresponding show of the appropriate tatoo can be grounds for death.
This leads to the enforced tolerance of evil casters, with the thought that the bad guys will not willingly mark themselves in this way if it would only lead to their death or persecution.
